In 2024, Raksha Bandhan will be observed on Monday, August 19th, falling on the full moon day of the Sawan month. Brothers reciprocate by giving gifts and promising to protect their sisters.
Raksha Bandhan History
Raksha Bandhan has ancient roots, with various myths highlighting its significance. One legend tells of Lord Indra’s wife, Indrani, who, after seeking advice from Brihaspati, tied a sacred thread on Indra’s wrist during a demonic invasion. Her gesture helped Indra and the gods win the battle, symbolizing the protective power of Rakhi. Another story from the Mahabharata recounts Draupadi’s act of tying a piece of her saree around Lord Krishna’s finger, which Krishna later reciprocated by defending her dignity. These stories underscore the festival’s role in reinforcing sibling bonds and social ties.
